A report in the Ipswich Journal** on Jan-27 in 1866 when George Woolnough was landlord states:
George Woolnough was charged with keeping the Wheatsheaf, Woodbridge Road, open in prohibited hours. Policeman Dunuct entered the house shortly after 11pm to find 8 persons in a room with 2 glasses on the table with a little beer in them. Woolnough stated that no beer had been drawn after 11pm. The case was dismissed.
