A paperback book published in 1969, called "Inns of the Suffolk Coast" by Leonard P Thompson** contains the following extract:
In 1855, John Ralph was at the Cross Keys and in Morris County Directory for 1861, Maria Watson is the owner. From local records, a George Gowing owned the Crown, prior to 1858. Were there 2 public houses, i.e. the Cross Keys & the Crown. or did one of them replace a much earlier establishment called the Chequers and did the Cross Keys eventually become the Crown?
