The Crooked Billet is described as standing "close to Seven Arches Bridge"; a predecessor to the present London Road bridge over the western branch of the Gipping. Handford Hall, which is referenced in various landlord listings was where the present Sainsbury's store stands; it can be seen on this old OS map from about the end of the 19th century. larger map
