Listed as the Cambridge Stores in the 1909 rating record, so perhaps only off-sales?
David Wallace recalls the following: "My mother used to tell me the tale of how when she was a young girl (circa 1914), she would accompany her grandfather as he drove his horse and cart around the town of Beccles. She recalls that he used to like to call in at the "Cambridge" in Northgate. Only much much later in life did she come to believe he was actually distributing various 'materials' to the Landlord, and these were very likely alcohol or tobacco based items smuggled into the locality via the Waveney River traffic. My Great Grandfather was a long established Marshman for the area, so I guess he got the opportunity to pick up the odd illicit package that was in big demand by the pub landlords. Those were the days."
