While doing some family history research I came across your Web Site and in particular the entry for the Trowel & Hammer in Wetheringsett. My grandfather, Walter Ager, was the Licensee there from 1913 until 1960 when the pub closed and became a private residence. The pub was struck by lightning in 1939 which destroyed the thatched roof & roof beams. The roof was replaced with a tiled roof which may well be the roof of the house shown in your photograph. While the roof was being repaired my grandfather continued to sell beer from a shed in front and to the side of the pub. As far as I know the house in your photograph although extended and modified is basically the original pub building.

I was born in 1938 and well remember during the latter years of the 2nd World War many USAF airmen visiting the pub from a nearby airbase. After my grandfather retired from the pub he lived with his son (my uncle) in the cottage next door.

My grandfather died in Dec 1960.
