Stowmarket Staff of Lifehistorical era: Victorian / Edwardian
opened 1836 circa
26 Stowupland St
The Staff of Life may have been a shop before becoming a beer house.
The pub was owned by John Cobbold, the Ipswich brewer, from 1836-49. Thomas Prentice & Co owned it from 1887-1907.
It was converted to residential use after closure.

(detailed information from Neil Langridge - and also Brian Southgate - see their book "Stowmarket, Combs and Stowupland Pubs" published by Polstead Press in 2009)
(** historic newspaper information from Bob Mitchell)
Bread is said to be the staff of life - thanks to Edward Edwards (early 1880s traveller) a lump of cheese and jug of beer may also be depicted together with the loaf!
