Elements of the building may originally have been parts of the Holy Trinity Guild Hall (and associated with the local woollen trade). Nearby Fair Gap was a large area that held a sheep fair on the feast of St John (23rd to 26th June). Since 1689 the building has been used as almshouses.

The building dates from the 16th or 17th century.
