The original White Horse was a short way to the east of the more recent pub building, where it was shown on 19th century OS maps. We don't know when the license was transferred, but part of the (now subdivided) older building has the date 1904 over the door, so this may be a clue. The 1909 Rates book names the new building as the "new" White Horse, suggesting a similar time.
A report in the Ipswich Journal** in July 1875 states :
To be sold by auction, Lot 4, the White Horse Inn, at East Bergholt, with possession at Michaelmas next, situated in the direct road from East Bergholt to Manningtree, now in the occupation of Mr Harry Moore.
A report in the Ipswich Journal** in Sep 1890 states that :
At the Samford Petty Sessions of the 16th September 1890, George Aldous, landlord of the East Bergholt White Horse, applied for a two hour extension on Friday the 19th , the occasion being the Foresters’ annual dinner, an extension of one hour was granted.
