The Eclipse is also Listed at Upper Orwell Street. The building is thought to date from the 17th century.
The pub's closure date was recorded in the Borough Police licensed premises register 1903-1923.

A champion racehorse of same name, born during a full eclipse in 1764, was reputedly unbeaten during its entire career and without ever being spurred or whipped, and also ensipred the popular phrase at the time "Eclipse first and the rest nowhere". See here.
