The Playhouse Bar stood roughly where Argos is now; the Half Moon was behind it, closer to High Baxter St.
"This [pub] was located behind what was LD Faiers' Wine Shop in the late 60 - 70s. There was a walk way between Buttermarket and High Baxter St and pub was midway between the two. It may have been originally a part of the Playhouse Cinema that was in Buttermarket? I worked there as a lad cleaning up on Sundays!!"(information supplied by G Reeve)
In early 19th cent. it traded as a Posting & Commercial Inn.
The inn itself was actually on High Baxter St, in the wing of the building perpendicular to the roads.
A cinema was built in 1930s possibly in one wing of the old inn and a bar was created to rear of cinema called the Playhouse bar before finally closing in 1970s.
