An earlier pub of the same name was located in the Market place.

"My grandfather, Richard DAVISON, was a Greene King tenant of two BSE pubs, the Chequers Alehouse and the George Inn. Please note spelling of his surname; the Kelly version is incorrect***"

"Licence was voluntarily surrendered 5 Dec 1957 at which date the pub closed and my grandfather continued to live at the premises until his death in 1976. The death of my grandmother earlier in the year triggered the closure of the pub***"

"The license was transferred by Greene King to their new pub the Greengage. There was once a framed notice to this effect in the Greengage***"

Also listed at Westgate Street, and at 19 or 16 Out Westgate or at 19 Westgate (in 1891).

A report in the Bury & Norwich Post** on Nov-28 in 1871 reports that the George pub in Westgate Road was sold to Mr T Catchpole of Hawstead for £1550
