The building dates from the 18th century or earlier.
We've seen one reference to this building as the Black Lion, though whether this is an older name or a mistake isn't currently known.
In 1888 the pub was listed at 53 Fore Street, St Clements.
By 1922 part of the pub had been converted into a Post Office and remains as a Post Office today. The license was surrendered February 1920, according to the Borough Police licensed premises register.
John Martin tells us:
My Great Grandmother Matilda Martin (later Wallace) ran the Bull & Dog in Fore Street in the late 1800s. When she re-married the family moved to the Lord Raglan on Woodbridge Road where she lived until the mid 1930s.
